Biography.

Geoffrey Abbott was born in London. He studied music at Birmingham University and trained as a teacher the University of London. He worked for several years as a repetiteur and conductor in London before moving to Germany. After working as ballet-repetiteur in Giessen he moved to Augsburg as musical director for the spoken theatre. He has musically directed theatre productions in Munich, Vienna and Berlin as well as in Switzerland and Italy. Geoffrey Abbott has been teaching since 1992 at the Augsburg conservatory which has now become the Leopold Mozart Centre of the University of Augsburg.

The music associated with the playwright Bertolt Brecht has been his special interest since student days when he organised and directed student productions of works by Brecht and Weill in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He has contributed a chapter on performance practice for the Cambridge University Press opera handbook on The Threepenny Opera, and in Augsburg, Brecht’s birthplace, he has continued to pursue this special interest with many performances of Brecht’s musical works.

Geoffrey Abbott is married to the actress and coach Dagmar Franz-Abbott and has two children.
